Elaine Ione Sprauve |
Elaine Ione Sprauve was born on the island of St. Thomas on January 9, 1913 to Louis and Ophalia Sprauve. Four years later the Sprauve family moved to St. John. After attending local elementary schools Miss Elaine graduated from Charlotte Amalie High School. Her first job was as a teacher at the Abraham Lincoln School (now called the J. Antonio Jarvis School) on St Thomas. She returned to St. John to become the island's first nursery/kindergarten teacher. In 1945 Miss Elaine joined the Administrator's staff as an Administrator's Clerk. Promotions led to Miss Elaine being appointed Special Assistant to the Administrator. During the time Miss Elaine functioned in her new position, she often served as Acting Administrator of St. John. Elaine Ione Sprauve also served as a part-time Deputy Collector of Customs and U.S. Immigration Inspector. Aside from government positions, Miss Elaine was a past president of St. John Business and Professional Women, a member of the League of Women Voters, the St. John Celebration Committee, the Advisory Board to the Commission on Aging, the Social Welfare Board, the Board of Queen Louise Home for Children, the Virgin Islands Health Association, the Governor's Committee to Employ Physically Handicapped and was active in the PTA and Girl Scouts. Miss Elaine was an active member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church. |
